Alumni Cheerleaders is excited to catch up with member Shannon McKain Oleen. Cheers to Shannon being selected Emcee for the Kansas City Command Football Team!!
Keynote Speaker Shannon McKain Oleen is a former dancer for the MLS and NFL, and currently serves as the Director of Consulting for Going Pro Entertainment and Emcee for the Kansas City Command arena football team. She is widely recognized as a leading authority in helping others find passion, create positive change and reach personal goals. Shannon has entertained and educated audiences around the world, receiving numerous accolades and awards throughout her career.
But the road to athletic success and career leadership wasn’t easy for Shannon. She was introduced to cheer and dance her freshman year in high school and instantly knew she had found her passion, but in a sport where most start as children, she was relatively behind her peers in skills and experience. Her diligence and persistence paid off when she landed a spot on the High School Varsity Pom Squad her junior year. She continued her dance career in college, where she danced for William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri for 4 years. It was during her college years that she faced her biggest setback of all, the premature and tragic loss of her mother to cancer. Shannon’s college endeavors were temporarily sidetracked as she dealt with this devastating loss and familial obligations.
Yet she overcame these setbacks with the characteristic strength and optimism that so many of her friends and peers have come to recognize in Shannon. She graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree in Communications and Political Science and was ready to take on the world.
Following college, Shannon pursued a career in corporate America while coaching at a Kansas City High School and being selected to cheer for the Sporting KC and Kansas City Comets Dance Teams. Then she set her sights on the big leagues – the National Football League, no less. She didn’t make the squad on her first try, however. No stranger to overcoming challenges, Shannon honed her skills through practice and dedication and landed a spot on the Kansas City Chiefs squad in 2009. She proudly represented the Chiefs and performed on the Arrowhead field for two years.
Now Shannon is focused on helping others achieve their dreams, drawing on her own experiences to encourage aspiring dancers. As the Director of Consulting for Going Pro Entertainment, she helps prepare women to enter collegiate, semi-pro and professional performance teams. She also facilitates cheer camps around the country and performs as a Keynote Speaker to help motivate and inspire youth.
Says Shannon: “I believe that cheer and dance can be one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have, and I’m honored and excited to help others achieve their dreams!”
Oftentimes when hopefuls are contemplating auditioning for a professional cheerleading squad, the question of “Which squad is right for ME” becomes important.
Most hopefuls resign themselves to audition for their local professional team, when actually they do not have to settle on that particular squad. Currently, there are 26 teams out of the 32 franchises in the NFL that have official cheerleaders and all 30 NBA organizations have dance teams, offering multiple opportunities to join a professional cheerleading organization. Therefore, a candidate should not pigeonhole herself to the squad with the closest proximity. This could result in a monumental mistake if becoming a professional cheerleader is in fact your dream. Oftentimes women audition for years in their home city, when they are much more suited for a team in another location!
When selecting the squad that is right for you, it is important to do some research on the organizations. You can do so by going to the team’s website, then decide for yourself which ones are contenders. I recommend you examine:
The “look” – does your hair, makeup, body and values fit how you want to be portrayed?
The city – do you enjoy the climate and environment of the team’s city? Could you find another job in that city? Fun fact: professional cheerleaders are paid minimal salaries, usually per game and per appearance rates.
The expectations – can you uphold the schedule and demands expected of you? Research appearance schedules, travel schedules, director’s resume, swimsuit / uniform calendar and other requirements.
The opportunities – are the cheerleaders a featured part of the organization, or are they an afterthought? Relocating to cheer for particular organizations could result in a life altering choice that provides many opportunities.
Life as a professional cheerleader is a wonderful ride. Before you embark on the journey of becoming a professional cheerleader, it is important that you contemplate the type of adventure you would like to have. Cheers to another wonderful year of NFL and NBA auditions!

In 2011, Going Pro Entertainment hosted an informal pro football cheerleaders reunion in Las Vegas. In attendance were 30 cheerleaders representing 15 organizations as well as executives from 4 sponsors. Since then the support has grown and many alumni directors/presidents and coordinators have received endorsement from their NFL teams to promote the event to their cheerleader alumni. Confirmed support comes from the Redskins, Falcons, Ravens, Patriots, Jaguars, Chargers, Titans, Oilers, Steelerettes, and more. The NFL Alumni Cheerleaders Group comprised of presidents/directors/coordinators of existing official alumni cheerleaders organizations has agreed to rotate a hosting organization on an annual basis. The goal is to promote alumni involvement, network, and support charity.
Going Pro Entertainment supports this event and will be representedby alumni of the Cowboys, Chiefs, Rams, Raiders, Cardinals, Texans, Bengals and more. Please take the time to pre-register and ask for the support of your alumni organization if you are not receiving messages from your team.
